Wonderful Friends, Incredible Light…

A few weeks back, just as winter was due to arrive, we made the most of some unseasonably warm weather and headed off on a crisp Sunday afternoon with cold beers, olives, good cheese and our kids in tow, down to a favourite little pocket of rugged coastline with some great friends for an afternoon picnic. I had no intention whatsoever of taking even a single frame this particular afternoon and, truth be known, only had my camera with me because I didn’t want to leave it in the car…

Once we had settled in and found a perfect little spot, perched above one of our favourite beaches with us being the only people in sight, I noticed… the light. Now don’t get me wrong here… I’m a big fan of beautiful natural light. However I never, ever make it the priority when I spend time taking photographs. It’s not that it isn’t important… It’s just that it’s not my style to chase a particular time of day or a sunset. I’m more interested in the people I spend time with… And if things work out well and they happen to be bathed in great light, then fantastic. If they’re not, from where I stand they’re still incredibly special and I will still capture who they are. I will still capture them and their emotions, their personalities, their interactions… That is what I look for, that is what I seek out.

But on this particular afternoon, I took a look around and saw some of our great friends and their beautiful kids, one of natures most spectacular locations… And, some seriously incredible light. So I took a few frames… And I’m so glad that I did.

Take a look…
